Bio
- Independent filmmaker and sound explorer; “Vincent Moon” is the public name of Mathieu Saura, born August 25, 1979 (vincentmoon.com/about). Collection Petites Planètes is the production company he co-runs with Priscilla Telmon (petitesplanetes.earth/en/biography).
- Nomadic, Paris-born — “our location is constantly changing” (petitesplanetes.earth/en/vision); mid-tour Ireland/UK at the time of the original dossier, Aug 2026 (his agenda, The Wire listing).
- Press: NYT “the re-inventor of the music video” (2011 — cited on his own bio and fr.wikipedia; original article not fetched) · Songlines feature “Nomad Cinema” (Aug 2024) · booking via Murailles Music.
- Platforms: petitesplanetes.earth · vincentmoon.com · Instagram · Bandcamp · YouTube /vincentmoon (channel URL not recorded; his PEOPLE ★ film is here).
- PEOPLE 2026: confirmed (seed + his own agenda: “OCTOBER 2026 · 10-11 · PEOPLE, Berlin” — vincentmoon.com/agenda; listed on peoplefestival.berlin/participants) — alumnus of 2016 (Michelberger Music) and 2018.
Practice Summary
- Moon co-created PEOPLE itself — he is in the festival’s own founding-circle list next to the Dessners, Justin Vernon, and the Michelbergers (peoplefestival.berlin/about), and the film at the top of the festival’s Past Editions page is his: PEOPLE ★ a music film by vincent moon (peoplefestival.berlin/past-editions).
- His practice since leaving indie-rock stardom-adjacency: 20 years nomadic, one bag of gear, filming sacred music and trance ceremonies on every continent (vincentmoon.com/about, Songlines).
- Publishing all of it — 1,300–1,600 films — free under Creative Commons (about page: 1,300+; Murailles bio: 1,600+).
- Then re-igniting the archive nightly as “Live Cinéma”: film edited live, in public, like a ceremony (about page, TECHNOLOGY; Murailles).
Threads they care about
1. He is a founder coming home
The festival’s own About page lists him in the small circle who ignited Michelberger Music 2016 / PEOPLE (peoplefestival.berlin/about), and the festival’s visual memory is substantially his footage — PEOPLE ★ leads their Past Editions page.
2026 is a co-creator returning to the room he helped invent.
Bonus filament: his saturated photo is the cover of The National’s Alligator (fr.wikipedia + Songlines) — his friendship with the Dessners predates everything.
No image: the natural picture is a frame of his PEOPLE ★ film, which exists online only as a YouTube thumbnail on the Michelberger Hotel channel and as festival-page “impressions” — neither a self-presented surface.
2. The marathon Live Cinémas
2026 is the year his Live Cinéma went durational: 12 hours in a Mexico City chapel (Capilla Sadi Carnot, Feb 8 — his agenda) and 6 hours at Banlieues Bleues (Mar 29).
“You can come and go freely, in search of flashes of brilliance… a magic lantern or a crystal-ball camera” (Murailles news; banlieuesbleues.org listing). Cinema run like a fair or a vigil, not a screening.
3. One bag
His entire filmmaking kit — Panasonic P2 camera, Audio-Technica camera mic, three Zoom recorders, Rode wireless, lavaliers — is enumerated on his own about page and “it all fits in a bag” (Songlines quote).
He works alone, films every two days on the road, and always gives a copy of the film back to the community. Degrowth as a visual fact.
No image: the kit is enumerated as text; no self-presented photo of the bag or gear was found on his site, Bandcamp, or agency page.
4. He now runs his own PEOPLE-shaped ritual
La Symphonie de Ségriès (symphonie.cc): 20 musicians from around the world, ~10 days in a Provence monastery, no hierarchy, ending in one public concert day, recordings released Creative Commons.
The PEOPLE model transplanted into a monastery — and he arrives at Funkhaus directly from it (Ségriès Sept 20–28 → PEOPLE Oct 10–11, his agenda).
Delight-grade oddments: he refuses video calls — “I’m blocked by the images, and I can’t speak anymore” (Songlines quote); the vision page says the duo improvise projects “following our intuitions and birds singings”; Songlines crowns him with Rimbaud’s nickname, l’homme aux semelles de vent — the man with soles of wind.
Medium & Materials
- Ethnographic-experimental film; handheld, sequence-shot, one take, no rehearsal (Songlines + fr.wikipedia — confirmed)
- Field recording / sound exploration: 250+ Bandcamp albums of travel recordings (Songlines †; Bandcamp itself returned a shell page)
- Live Cinéma: real-time film editing (VDMX) + live music (Ableton Live), performance adapted to each venue, sometimes with local musicians (self-stated tech list + Murailles — confirmed)
- Gear (self-stated, about page): Panasonic P2 AG-HPX250 · Audio-Technica BP4025 camera mic · Zoom H2n, H6e, F2 · Rode Wireless Go III · Tram & Sanken lavaliers · DaVinci Resolve
- Immersive installations & photography, with Priscilla Telmon (self-stated, biography/vision pages)
- Everything published open-source, CC BY-NC-SA (self-stated about page + Murailles + fr.wikipedia — confirmed)
- Híbridos, the Spirits of Brazil — 5 years filming Brazilian spirit rituals, shown “from MoMA in New York to the Barbican in London” (self-stated, biography page; third-party-verifiable career claim not independently verified here — †)
Aesthetic Vocabulary
- “an optical ritual… an endless research into contemporary trance” (Murailles bio)
- “a magic lantern or a crystal-ball camera, fragments from all over the world, spiritual wanderings, and bubbling ceremonies” (Murailles news, 2026)
- “a fountain of intensities, paroxysms, trances released in a single shot in the leaping colors of the projection (think cannon, think catapult)” (Murailles news)
- “There’s much more movement than words in my films… I’m just there watching the moment” (Songlines)
- the sequence shot as “an act of illusion, hypnosis, visual trance” (Songlines)
- “absolute subjectivity, a slightly gonzo film collection… doesn’t give a damn about any hierarchy” (Songlines)
- “local music,” never “world music” (Songlines)
- “art as care” (biography page)
- “faith in the impromptu, the accident, the chaos” (vision page)
- “we are only bridges” (vision page)
- Sound materials (not paintable — stays here): zar ceremonies in Cairo, Afro-Brazilian ritual percussion, a-capella village songs, Japanese harsh noise, stadium rock, drone-ish “repetitive sound friction” opening films in blackness (Songlines)
- Inferred: his light is projection-light and found daylight — the films begin in black and let a window teach the room its shape; nothing in the sources supports cozy amber.

Studio Design Brief
Visual anchor
The projection wall mid-ritual — one wall of the room alive with saturated moving imagery, the beam crossing darkness (sourced: Murailles, Expanded Live Cinéma).
Mood
Optical ritual; vigil-like patience; hypnosis rather than spectacle; generous — the door never locks.
Density
Sparse. “95% of the time today, cinema is made with far too many resources” (Songlines quote) — his degrowth ethic is the spatial argument. One bag, one desk, one wall of light.
Surprise element
The single open bag that contains an entire world cinema — camera, recorders, mics, twenty years, every continent (thread 3 they care about, made spatial).
Negative space
The darkness itself — everything outside the beam falls away; upper air of the room stays black like the first seconds of his films.
Sketch Brief
The content half of a draft-status sketch prompt; the style half lives with the art director and is joined at assembly. Inventory-bound and thread-tied; no texture, palette, or lighting guesses. All of it is a recommendation — the artist and the art director change anything.
In the sketch — ranked, up to four, each naming its thread
- One wall of a dark room running with projected moving film — thread 2 (the marathon Live Cinémas).
- A single worn travel bag lying open on bare floorboards, a small camera and three field recorders spilling out — thread 3 (one bag).
- A wooden chapel pew facing the projection, angled as if dragged there — thread 2 (the chapel stagings, Capilla Sadi Carnot).
- A stone sill at one window with plain daylight on it — thread 4 (the Ségriès monastery).
Left open for the artist — what the sketch deliberately leaves blank
- The walls · what the projection shows · the second half of the room · whether the window is monastery or Funkhaus · what is on the shelves · where the door is.
Self-stated visual importances — only what they have said matters, with the link
- None recorded as a stated preference. Two sourced visual facts sit close to one: his films open in black and let a window “gradually emerge in the dark” (Songlines’ description of MESTRE! MESTRE!), and his agency’s text names “the leaping colors of the projection” (Murailles news) — descriptions of the work, not instructions for a room.
For the art director — their own visual vocabulary, as hints
- “a magic lantern or a crystal-ball camera” (Murailles news) · “an optical ritual” (Murailles bio) · “illusion, hypnosis, visual trance” (Songlines).
Content prompt — about 45 words, 2–4 objects, no people, no camera
A dark room. One wall runs with projected moving film. A worn travel bag lies open on bare floorboards, a small camera and three field recorders spilling out. A single wooden chapel pew faces the wall, angled as if dragged there.
Room Descriptions
- Signature — Dark as a chapel. One wall runs with saturated film — a faraway ceremony, edited as you watch. Drums pulse under the floor; dust drifts in the beam. Stay six hours or six minutes; the door never locks and no one checks the time.
- Working — A single bag gapes open on a trestle table: small camera, three field recorders, a wireless mic still coiled. Notebooks of village names, half in French. Playback murmurs low — singers finish a take somewhere, and someone laughs off-mic.
- Unexpected — Hour eleven of twelve. A chapel pew, warm from the last visitor, faces the projection; the air smells faintly of candle wax. He promised a cinema you can leave and re-enter like a fair. On the door, a small star chalked by hand.
- Atmospheric — At first the room is black, and only a low friction of sound. Then a window brightens over a street you can half hear, and the picture assembles itself slowly, like an eye adjusting. Nothing asks to be understood; everything asks to be watched.
- The Encounter — He just left — chair pushed back, camera still warm, a lavalier clipped to the music stand. On the edit screen, a note: DON’T CUT YET. Down the hall, forty studio doors are opening, and you follow the sound of the nearest one.
Image Prompt Variants
Variant A — Sparse
Objects — 3 (travel bag, small broadcast camera, projection wall)
Prompt — A worn travel bag sits open on bare floorboards, a small broadcast camera resting beside it. Across the room, one entire wall runs with saturated moving color — a projected ritual, reds and greens bleeding at the edges. Nothing else. First notice: the burning wall of color. Second pull: the humble bag, absurdly small against it. Slow reveal: a coiled wireless mic spilling from the bag’s mouth.
Palette — near-black, saturated crimson, phosphor green, dust-gray
Lighting — The only light is the projector’s cool beam crossing from behind head-height, breaking into saturated color where it strikes the far wall; dust hangs in it, and everything outside the beam falls to near-black.
Negative space — the entire left two-thirds of the room and all upper air, held in darkness.
Variant B — Curated
Objects — 6 (edit desk with laptop + fader controller, chapel pew, projection wall, row of three field recorders, coiled cables, short stack of hard drives)
Prompt — A live-editing desk — laptop, small fader controller, three field recorders in a row — faces a wall of projected saturated imagery. A single wooden chapel pew sits between desk and wall, angled as if dragged there. Coiled cables and a modest stack of hard drives wait on the floor by the desk leg. The desk surface is half bare. First notice: the projection. Second pull: the pew, empty, mid-room. Slow reveal: the drives — a world archive in a stack the height of a loaf.
Palette — charcoal, projection-cyan, warm wood, cable-black
Lighting — Cool spill from the projection washes the pew’s back; a small neutral work light hangs low over the desk only, leaving the ceiling and corners unlit.
Negative space — the floor between pew and wall stays open; upper third of the frame is black air.
Variant C — Layered
Objects — 9, in three zones (window; edit desk + recorders + notebooks + cables; pew + projection wall + bag + drive shelf)
Prompt — Three zones. Along one side, a tall window brightens over an unseen street, monastery-stone sill catching pale daylight, the room around it still shadowed. Center, the working zone: trestle edit desk with laptop and fader controller, field recorders, open travel notebooks, cables looping to the floor. Far zone, darkest: a chapel pew before a wall of saturated projected film, the packed travel bag by the door beneath a short shelf of hard drives and field-recording albums. First notice: the bright window emerging from black. Second pull: the burning projection wall opposite it — day and ritual facing each other. Slow reveal: the bag by the door, already zipped, ready to leave.
Palette — stone-gray daylight, ink shadow, saturated projection reds, paper cream
Lighting — Two competing sources — pale neutral daylight through the single window, and the projector’s saturated beam in the far zone — with a wide band of true darkness between them; no other light.
Negative space — the dark middle band between window-light and projection-light, roughly a third of the room.
Identity resolution
Case A (rich seed), with the seed’s Case B flag resolved. “Vincent Moon” is a pseudonym — his own about page states it in the open: “Vincent Moon (real name Mathieu Saura, born August 25, 1979)” (vincentmoon.com/about; corroborated by fr.wikipedia). This is a pen name worn publicly for 20+ years, not a mask: every surface he controls self-presents as Vincent Moon, so the dossier and the room use that name. The Case-B-style convention that does apply: Petites Planètes is the project-world (a production company and collection co-run with his partner-collaborator Priscilla Telmon — biography page) — the room belongs to that world, and the person appears only as traces.

Process self-report
Sources: 13 fetched surfaces + 3 web searches; failures were shells/walls (Bandcamp, YouTube consent, homepage carousel), none load-bearing. Wall-clock: ~15 minutes. Threads they care about: 4 strong ones found — founder-coming-home (festival’s own pages), 2026 marathon Live Cinémas, the one-bag kit (self-enumerated down to model numbers), and Ségriès-as-sibling-ritual with a Sept→Oct handoff straight into PEOPLE. This subject is the opposite of thin — the friction was abundance: the self-stated surface is so articulate that the discipline was verifying rather than digging. Skill friction: (1) the seed’s “Case B consideration” resolved into something the ladder doesn’t quite name — a personal pseudonym worn as the primary public identity is neither project-alias nor plain Case A; I handled it as A-with-a-note, and the skill could name this sub-case. (2) Two self-surfaces disagreed on film count (1,300+ vs his agency’s 1,600+) — “Contested” per the taxonomy, but this is benign staleness-drift between an artist’s own pages, and a lighter marker (“growth-drift”) might stop it reading like a dispute. (3) YouTube consent walls block fetch.py at rung 1; festival re-hosting made escalation unnecessary, but a note in the skill that official festival/venue pages often mirror walled video metadata would save a rung.
