**Bio**

- Irish singer-songwriter and voice actress, b. 1981, Kilcloon, Co. Meath; based Dublin ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)).
- Own site [lisahannigan.ie](https://lisahannigan.ie/) is frozen at the 2019 *Live in Dublin* release — treat as historical. IG [@lisahannigan](https://www.instagram.com/lisahannigan/) (walled, see ledger).
- Three studio albums — *Sea Sew* (2008, Mercury Prize + Choice Music Prize nominated), *Passenger* (2011), *At Swim* (2016) — plus *Live in Dublin* with s t a r g a z e (2019) ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan), [lisahannigan.ie](https://lisahannigan.ie/)).
- **PEOPLE 2026 roster: on the Aug 18 embed, not on the Sep 15 embed** — dropped or embed lag; status unknown, ask at the sessions. Was listed as confirmed (seed + [nialler9 roster, 2026-07-02](https://nialler9.com/people-festival-returns-to-berlin-this-october-with-aaron-dessner-damien-rice-lisa-hannigan-ye-vagabonds-efrim-menuck-nick-zinner-and-175-more-musicians-for-a-week-of-unscripted-collaboration/)); alumna of Michelberger Music 2016 and PEOPLE 2018, both at Funkhaus ([musikexpress](https://www.musikexpress.de/das-michelberger-hotel-laedt-mit-the-national-und-bon-iver-zum-diy-festival-640557/), [concertarchives](https://www.concertarchives.org/concerts/people-festival-2018)).

## Practice Summary

- Hannigan writes sea-soaked folk songs and describes her own practice in boats: her
songs are "a tiny rowboat muddling along," an orchestra is "this ocean liner... I'm
desperately trying not to be run over by" ([Barbican digital programme](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze)).
- The right collaborators are the ones who "climbed into my tiny boat" ([Barbican digital programme](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze)).
- She is also, improbably, the voice of Blue Diamond in *Steven Universe* and a selkie
mother in *Song of the Sea* — a career-long sideline in being the voice of oceanic,
  otherworldly women ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)).

---

## Threads they care about

### 1. She is woven into PEOPLE's founding fabric — the return is a homecoming.

Aaron Dessner (PEOPLE co-founder) emailed her "out of the (big) blue" and produced
*At Swim* (2016); André de Ridder (PEOPLE co-founder) played violin and arranged
strings on it ([Barbican digital programme, 2018](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze)).

She played Michelberger Music 2016 and PEOPLE 2018 at Funkhaus (seed `prior_years`;
[musikexpress](https://www.musikexpress.de/das-michelberger-hotel-laedt-mit-the-national-und-bon-iver-zum-diy-festival-640557/); [concertarchives](https://www.concertarchives.org/concerts/people-festival-2018)), where
she performed with s t a r g a z e ([Barbican](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze)) and filmed a collaboration with
Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner & Heather Broderick (peoplefestival.berlin film-page
title — page now 404, see Retrieval; †). Her only live album, *Live in Dublin* (2019) with s t a r g a z e —
arrangements by Bryce Dessner, de Ridder, Timo Andres and others — is effectively
the PEOPLE orbit captured on vinyl ([lisahannigan.ie liner note](https://lisahannigan.ie/), self-stated).

Returning after 8 years, she isn't a guest at Funkhaus; she's part of why the
thing exists.

<figure style="max-width:420px;margin:.6em 0"><img src="img/lisa-hannigan/01-stargaze-stage.jpg" alt="Black-and-white photo from behind the orchestra: Lisa Hannigan at center stage with a mandolin, s t a r g a z e players and music stands in the foreground, the hall dark beyond" style="max-width:100%;height:auto;border:1px solid #d8cfc0"><figcaption style="font-size:.8em;line-height:1.3"><em>Hannigan onstage with s t a r g a z e — her site's 2019 background photo, <a href="https://lisahannigan.ie/">lisahannigan.ie</a>.</em></figcaption></figure>

### 2. The nautical vocabulary is total.

*Sea Sew* → *Passenger* → *At Swim* (title from Flann O'Brien's *At-Swim-Two-Birds*);
rowboat/ocean-liner metaphors; songwriting "is like pastry, you can't work it too
much" ([Barbican](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze), self-stated).

The *Sea Sew* sleeve featured her own needlework ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)/album art, confirmed).
She sews, and she sews the sea.

*No image: the* At Swim *and* Live in Dublin *covers on her site are served only as 123–127 px thumbnails; she has no Bandcamp; Instagram is walled.*

### 3. The unusual read: Blue Diamond and the selkie.

Voice of Blue Diamond in *Steven Universe* (2017–2020) and Bronagh, the selkie
mother, in *Song of the Sea* (2014); sang "Danny Boy" and a "Toxic" cover for
*Fargo*; vocals on the *Gravity* soundtrack ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan), confirmed).

Herbie Hancock on her singing: "choices that Miles would have made"
([Wikipedia-cited quote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)). Also once drenched in melted chocolate for an Oxfam
campaign ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan), †).

*No image: the voice roles' stills belong to the studios, not to her own surfaces.*

### 4. Recent work (recency directive).

No fourth album announced as of Aug 2026 — searched, found nothing; that absence is
a finding, and it makes the residency week interesting: she arrives between records.

Latest traces: featured single "Last Night On The Mountain" with SunYears (May 2025,
on *The Song Forlorn*) ([Stereogum](https://www.stereogum.com/2308133/sunyears-peter-bjorn-and-john-announces-new-album-the-song-forlorn-hear-last-night-on-the-mountain-feat-lisa-hannigan-sam-genders/music/) + [Bandcamp](https://sun-years.bandcamp.com/album/last-night-on-the-mountain-ft-lisa-hannigan-sam-genders), confirmed); co-wrote/sang Gemma Hayes's
"Feed the Flames" (2024) ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feed_the_Flames)/[Hot Press](https://www.hotpress.com/music/gemma-hayes-shares-new-single-feed-the-flames-23004357), confirmed); guest on The National's
*First Two Pages of Frankenstein* (2023) and two Ed Sheeran tracks (2023)
([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan), confirmed).

*Footnote, flagged neutrally:* Damien Rice — whose band she left in 2007, the
afternoon before a Munich show ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)) — is also confirmed for PEOPLE 2026
([nialler9](https://nialler9.com/people-festival-returns-to-berlin-this-october-with-aaron-dessner-damien-rice-lisa-hannigan-ye-vagabonds-efrim-menuck-nick-zinner-and-175-more-musicians-for-a-week-of-unscripted-collaboration/)). Not room material; worth knowing in the building.

## Medium & Materials

- Voice — folk-opera softness; jazz note-choices per Hancock [confirmed]
- Harmonium, melodica, banjo, thumb piano, mandolin, ukulele, glockenspiel, guitar —
"broken-down, wheezy old instruments" ([Wikipedia instrument list + cited quote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan),
  confirmed)
- Needlework/knitting — *Sea Sew* sleeve was her own [confirmed]
- Orchestral collaboration — s t a r g a z e, ~12–13 players ([Barbican](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze), confirmed)
- Words borrowed from poets: Seamus Heaney's "Anahorish" set to music; Enda Walsh
  lyric for "Swan" ([Barbican](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze), confirmed)
- Voice acting — Blue Diamond, Bronagh [confirmed]

---

## Aesthetic Vocabulary

Her own words first: *tiny rowboat / ocean liner / "they all climbed into my tiny
boat" / adrift, "not knowing where land was" / songwriting as pastry — overworked
turns tough / "turned my musical Kansas into Oz"* (on s t a r g a z e's
arrangements; [Barbican](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze), [lisahannigan.ie](https://lisahannigan.ie/)).

Album-world: spectral, stark, weighty (*At Swim*, per [Barbican](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze));
burnished and lighter (*Sea Sew*).

Sound materials (not paintable): wheezy drones, sparse arrangements, "judicious
textural approaches" learned from Dessner, the sea-shanty pull of the SunYears
single.

Inferred, labeled: her palette reads Irish-coastal — gray-green water light,
unbleached wool, dark wood — rather than warm-amber café folk.

---

## Studio Design Brief

**Visual anchor**

The worn harmonium, lid draped with half-finished knitting — both sourced
specifics, and together they say *Sea Sew* without a caption.

**Mood**

Spectral but hospitable — stark room, warm wool; adrift, then land ahoy.

**Density**

Sparse-to-Moderate. Her mature sound is subtraction (Dessner taught her to abandon
"instrumental ballast"); the room should practice what the records preach.

**Surprise element**

A tiny rowboat, indoors — her own metaphor made spatial [invention, tagged: derived
from her self-stated rowboat/ocean-liner language]. Alternative surprise: a faint
blue gem glow on a shelf (Blue Diamond) [invention, tagged; grounded in confirmed
role].

**Negative space**

The upper half of the room — barn-high emptiness where the ocean-liner orchestra
isn't. UI overlays live in that air.

---

## Sketch Brief

The content half of a draft-status sketch prompt; the style half lives with the art
director and is joined at assembly. Inventory-bound and thread-tied; no texture,
palette, or lighting guesses. All of it is a recommendation — the artist and the art
director change anything.

**In the sketch** — ranked, up to four, each naming its thread

1. A small worn harmonium with half-finished knitting draped over its closed lid — thread 2 (the *Sea Sew* needlework; the "broken-down, wheezy old instruments").
2. A tiny wooden rowboat beached on bare floorboards, oars shipped — thread 2 (her rowboat/ocean-liner metaphor made spatial; tagged invention in the Studio Design Brief).
3. Pencil-marked score pages fanned across the boards — thread 1 (the s t a r g a z e arrangements by Bryce Dessner, de Ridder, Timo Andres, and others).
4. Wooden chairs in an inward-facing circle, no stage — thread 1 (her first s t a r g a z e rehearsal memory).

**Left open for the artist** — what the sketch deliberately leaves blank

- The walls · what is on the shelves · whether there is a window at all · the far half of the room · whether the blue gem is there.

**Self-stated visual importances** — only what they have said matters, with the link

- None recorded in this dossier. The gray-green maritime light is inferred (tagged in the Visual Inventory), and the Thomastown rehearsal barn is sourced as a spatial signature ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)), not as a stated visual preference.

**For the art director** — their own visual vocabulary, as hints

- "A tiny rowboat muddling along" beside "this ocean liner" ([Barbican digital programme](https://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-programmes/lisa-hannigan-with-stargaze)) · "broken-down, wheezy old instruments" ([Wikipedia-cited quote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Hannigan)) · "turned my musical Kansas into Oz" ([lisahannigan.ie liner note](https://lisahannigan.ie/)).

**Content prompt** — about 45 words, 2–4 objects, no people, no camera

> A small worn harmonium against a bare board wall, half-finished knitting draped over its closed lid. On the floor before it, a tiny wooden rowboat, oars shipped. Pencil-marked score pages fanned between them.

---

## Room Descriptions

1. **Signature** — A small harmonium wheezes a warm drone by the window.
Half-finished knitting on its lid, salt in the air you can't place, and the whole
room rocks gently, like a rowboat that became a house.
2. **Working** — Score pages fan across bare boards — Lo, Ora, Anahorish
   — pencil edits still soft. Wooden chairs sit in a circle facing inward, a melodica
waiting on one seat. Tea gone cold. You've walked into the held breath.
3. **Unexpected** — Beached mid-room: an actual tiny rowboat, oars
shipped, a banjo resting in the bow. On the shelf a faint blue gem glows beside a
folded gray sealskin. The voice here has been a Diamond and a selkie. Hum back.
4. **Atmospheric** — Gray-green light, the kind the Irish Sea saves for
February. Bare boards, one chair, the harmonium breathing at rest. The old radio
building hums under everything, patient as water under a hull.
5. **The Encounter** — The kettle is still ticking. A wool coat hangs by
the door, one sleeve unraveling into a ball of yarn on the floor. She's two
studios away, singing with strangers, and the door is left open.

## Image Prompt Variants

### Variant A — Sparse

**Objects** — 3 (harmonium, knitting on its lid, one wooden chair)

**Prompt** — A small worn harmonium against the wall of a bare wooden barn-room,
half-finished knitting in unbleached wool draped over its closed lid, one wooden
chair pulled close with its back at an angle, as if just left. Floorboards run long
and empty toward the viewer; the upper half of the frame is open air. Cool gray-green
daylight enters low from a single tall window at left, soft and diffuse, the color
of overcast sea light, modeling the bellows' cracked leather.

**Palette** — gray-green, unbleached wool, dark honey wood

**Lighting** — low side-light from left window; diffuse, cool, overcast-maritime

**Negative space** — entire upper half open; right third of floor bare

### Variant B — Curated

**Objects** — 6 (circle of chairs, melodica, score pages, teacup, harmonium,
yarn ball)

**Prompt** — Six wooden chairs arranged in a close inward-facing circle at the center
of a plain studio with acoustic wood paneling. A melodica rests on one seat,
pencil-marked score pages on two others, a cold teacup under a third, a ball of wool
yarn trailing beneath. The harmonium waits outside the circle against the far wall,
small and patient. Warm practical light from a single low lamp inside the circle
pools on the seats and falls off quickly, leaving the paneled walls in cool shadow.

**Palette** — lamplight gold, chair-wood brown, shadow blue-gray

**Lighting** — one low warm lamp at circle center; steep falloff; cool ambient shadow

**Negative space** — everything beyond the circle recedes to shadow, ~40% of frame

### Variant C — Layered

**Objects** — 9 in 3 zones (rowboat + banjo + oars / harmonium + glockenspiel +
scores / bookshelf with LPs, paperbacks, faint blue gem)

**Prompt** — A high barn-like room in three quiet zones. Foreground left: a tiny
wooden rowboat resting on the floorboards, oars shipped, a banjo lying in the bow.
Mid-ground right: the worn harmonium with a glockenspiel on top and score pages
weighted by a stone. Far wall: one low bookshelf holding two LPs face-out, a stack
of dog-eared paperbacks, and a small blue gem giving off the faintest glow. Cold
gray window light floods from high on the right, brightest on the boat, dimming
zone by zone toward the shelf, so the room reads front-to-back like a tide going out.

**Palette** — sea-gray, boat-timber brown, wool cream, one note of blue

**Lighting** — high right window; cold, directional, graded falloff front to back

**Negative space** — upper third fully open; wide bare floor between zones

## Identity resolution

**Case A.** Strong seed with official URL; identity unambiguous. Current-surface
caveat: her own website's newest item is 2019 ([lisahannigan.ie](https://lisahannigan.ie/)), so all recency facts above come from
press and platform surfaces, not lisahannigan.ie.

## Process self-report

Sources: 6 ok, 2 failed, 1 walled; ~15 min wall-clock. Threads they care about: 4 found —
place-history is the crown (she predates the dossier's need for it: producer,
arranger, and live album all flow from the PEOPLE founding orbit; returning after 8
years). Self-presentation surfaces are weak: official site frozen at 2019, IG walled
at every rung, so "own vocabulary" rides almost entirely on one exceptional source
(the 2018 Barbican program's direct quotes) — a freshness risk the skill might
name: *when the newest self-stated voice source is 8 years old, say so*. Friction:
peoplefestival.berlin's 2026 rebuild 404'd its own 2018 archive pages while Wayback
was offline — the festival's own history was the single hardest thing to source.
