Practice Summary

• The conductor who was in the room when PEOPLE was invented: his ensemble s t a r g a z e was recording Bryce Dessner’s Revenant score at the Funkhaus in winter 2015 when the Michelberger crew drove over with coffee and sandwiches, saw the building, and started a festival — with de Ridder as one of its named co-curators (NPR; stargaze’s own Revenant entry).

NPR (Oct 2016) names him among the curators alongside Vernon, the Dessners, Moon, Olson, Reid, and the Michelbergers — and tells the origin story: stargaze’s 25-piece Revenant session at Funkhaus Nalepastraße, winter 2015, Milchbar shut, nearest food an understocked gas station; Dessner phones the Michelberger; Tom Michelberger and Nadine May arrive in a van with coffee and sandwiches and marvel at the building.

stargaze’s own site pushes the building history back further: These New Puritans’ Field of Reeds instrumentals recorded with stargaze at the Funkhaus’s P4 studio in April 2012 (stargaze, Field of Reeds entry; Revenant entry).

At the 2016 edition he set stargaze up in a circle formation to use the studio’s acoustics, and backed Ragnar Kjartansson singing Bowie’s “Heroes” — introduced as “the national anthem of Berlin” (NPR).

2. PEOPLE editions literally spawned albums he then made

Lisa Hannigan was invited onstage with stargaze at PEOPLE and “the project spiraled on from there” (→ their joint album; stargaze, Lisa Hannigan and s t a r g a z e LP entry). Arone Dyer (Buke & Gase) met stargaze at PEOPLE 2018 and they built an album via a €25,000 stargaze Kickstarter (both self-stated: Kickstarter entry, album launch entry).

The residency-week format is where his collaborations begin — a fact worth handing him back.

3. The brand-new record: Song of the Earth (released 4 April 2025)

David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) wrote it for stargaze in 2022 — “a sort of Lied von der Erde 2” after Mahler, written in six “manic” weeks, three years revising; features Steve Lacy, Mount Eerie, Tim Bernardes; US premiere sold out Disney Hall with the LA Phil, March 2024 (stargaze, Song of the Earth album entry; Wikipedia).

Tracklist is a nature poem: “Twin Aspens,” “Paper Birches, Whole Scroll,” “So Blue the Lake,” “Spiderweb at Water’s Edge.”

4. Terry Riley’s In C is his recurring ritual

2013: In C live-sampled and reworked with Matthew Herbert at the Kölner Philharmonie (stargaze, In C with Matthew Herbert entry).

Then he initiated and led In C Mali in Bamako with local musicians, Brian Eno and Damon Albarn joining, and produced the record (HarrisonParrott †). One 1964 minimalist score, carried across continents.

5. The era pivot (bonus register)

PEOPLE 2026 lands in his final Freiburg season, on the eve of taking up ENO and the NZSO — the festival week is arguably his last stretch of pure-collective freedom before three institutional podiums (Wikipedia, HarrisonParrott).

Threads they care about: 4 strong + 1 bonus — unusually rich; the seed’s alumnus pointer paid off exactly as the skill predicts (place-history was the deepest vein: he’s not just an alumnus, he’s a co-creator whose ensemble’s 2015 Funkhaus session is the festival’s literal origin story, with building history back to 2012). Friction for the skill: (1) fetch.py has no TLS-error escape hatch — the artist’s canonical site was unreachable at every fetch.py rung for an expired-cert reason no ladder rung addresses; curl -k was the workaround, worth naming in the skill’s escalation ladder as a distinct failure class (cert-broken ≠ walled).
